Rosalind Creasy is a pioneer in the field of Edible Landscaping- namely the art of turning over your lawn in favor of a lush and tastefully arranged garden full of vegetables, fruits and other unlikely edibles. More than just growing food though, Ros is most likely the nation’s expert on the landscaping aspect of this art- using edibles to make a truly beautiful garden that is also wonderfully functional. She has published innumerable garden books, and is working on her biggest to date, the updated Edible Landscaping (Sierra Club Books 2010). Ros asked me to take a number of author photographs to be used in this book and her other upcoming publications. We came away with a nice mix that she can rotate through for the next several years. Below are just a few, concentrating on the author- but check out the edible nasturtium flowers and cabbage in the backgrounds. Everything has a purpose!

Be sure to check out Ros’ new book next year, and if you haven’t already, think about gardening! I can’t wait for my group of Early Girl tomatoes to come in this summer. Should be about 4 weeks!

I was recently asked to do a pregnancy shoot for Darlene. After several years shooting weddings, I found myself looking forward to the challenge of a new genre of photography where I could apply a bit of my main field while exploring something totally new. This photo shoot called for a little bit of classic portraiture, with plenty of time for my own artistic license, and of course a bit of goofy fun. To be honest, the only preganancy photos that I’ve seen have been somber black and white photos next to a window, or perhaps with a simple backdrop. This serves a purpose, allowing the subject to easily become the central focus in the image. As such, I made sure to do a few photos like this, and came away with some really beautiful shots.

However, I also wanted to take some photos that were a bit more fresh, energetic, and reflected some of the intricacies of who I was photographing. Pregnancy photos can be contemplative, but I figured that they could also be sexy, fun, and energetic too. In fact, when talking to Darlene, she basically wanted to document this important stage in her life, but though photos that showed off different sides of her persona, only one of which was the obvious “pregnant.” So we spent some time, shot lots of photos, and used a variety of backdrops from Darlene’s awesome retro kitchen floor in a knockout green dress, to playing with the last of the fall leaves outside, to a bit of classic portraiture by the window (yes, I can do that too .

Thanks so much to Darlene for giving me this opprotunity. I couldn’t have found an easier, more fun, or more photogenic mom-to-be to work with. Below is a small selection of what we came away with.

Today I met with the Ibarra family for a family photo session. We spent a few hours playing around on the beach and the downtown Malecon. The sunsets have been spectacular lately in La Paz, and today was no exception. The kids were super cute, and all I had to do was sit back and let mom, dad, and the kids do their thing. Here are a few of my favorites…
–

This past week I spent 4 days in San Luis Obispo visiting my parents and their new dog Rosie. It was so relaxing to be back in my old stomping grounds, taking walks out into the hills, spending time with the dog, and enjoying some really good home cooked meals. I imagine that it can often be an impersonal process looking through a photographer’s work, so I wanted to break things up a little bit and show a few shots that wouldn’t otherwise make it into cyberspace.

My dad and I just came back from a walk out onto the ridge behind our ranch, a little to the north of San Luis Obispo. There was a wonderful sunset and a beautiful view over the hills towards the ocean, and over Cal Poly. I really liked these silhouettes.

And a few more from a little walk along the beach near Cayucos after we had done some wine tasting in the Adelaide Mountains (hint: try Whalebone and Halter Ranch Vineyards if you are ever near the Paso Robles wine country).

So yes, we do a lot of walking as a family. That and eating. I guess that explains my propensity to take all my clients for long walks into the California hills in our photo sessions. Don’t worry though, after 6 years in the Bay Area I’m kind of getting into the city thing too.

I’ll leave you with a final shot of Rosie and I, just after we finished reading the newspaper together. Photo is by the talented Colleen Rosenthal. Growing up I had a pug and a ridgeback. I loved my pug (Wrinkles) dearly, and would often say that I could tell right away if I was going to be friends with someone by how they felt about Wrinkles. For those who didn’t think that pugs were cute, they were on a slippery slope! I’m in a doggone good mood right now (sorry), so I’ll go ahead and offer a little thank you for those of you reading my blog. If you are a past or future client and would like to write a comment to this post to the effects of “Rosie is cute” or other favorable notes about her striking profile or running form, I’ll offer a free print up to 20×24 (a $100+ value) with your next print order. Disparaging remarks will result in a 20% price increase.

I’ve been working with my wonderful assistant Nancy since May of this year. She loves to do baby and pet photography. I love to do weddings, wildlife, and travel (ok- and pretty much everything else too). I wanted to help get her some more experience, so we headed off to work with some of my previous portrait clients in San Francisco, with me assisting Nancy this time. Nancy took charge and I got to sit back and have fun taking pictures. I have seen a lot of work done in a studio, and I don’t care so much for the formal and static photos that result. I much prefer an approach I like to call “lifestyle portraiture.” Basically taking photos of people, babies, weddings etc in an environment that is natural, and reflects an actual view into the daily life of the subject and a moment in context. Just my perspective .

Nancy did a spectacular job, the kids were adorable, and I think the shoot turned out wonderfully. Here are a few favorites that I grabbed from the day. Like family snapshots, only better!

This past weekend I went out with Baja Challenge for wakeboarding in the La Paz bay. While I am now primarily a wedding photographer, this photography challenge brought back good memories of the days when I was doing newspaper photography for football and basketball games. Challenging focus, a bouncing boat, and trying to keep my camera dry sure kept me busy. I must say, however, that this evening was far more beautiful than any football game that I’ve been to, and arguably much more fun. We raced in front of the La Paz shoreline and were treated to a spectacular sunset at the end of the evening. Check out a few of the photos!

My work documenting the Salud en tus Manos program with Fundación Cántaro Azul continued this past week, as we left for the northern regions of the Municipio de Comondu to visit another set of communities, and attend a set of training sessions. This particular week was inspiring, as I watched an idea grow quickly, and the project possibly double in size with the added support of almost everyone we met this past week. As a quick recap, Foundacion Cantaro Azul is an NGO based out of La Paz, Mexico. They are starting a project that brings hand hygiene education programs to schools in rural Baja, while also providing hand sanitizer as a technology that facilitates hand hygiene for students and community members. During this past week I went out with Ian Balam, the foundation’s director, as he introduced the program to the teachers at schools (which started this Monday), to doctors at various rural clinics, and to health promoters who work at boarding schools around this region. The reception to the program was overwhelmingly positive. More schools wanted to join the program, hospitals and rural clinics are interested, and Cantaro Azul’s Salud en tus Manos program could soon be off to an exciting start. It’s been wonderful to see the progression, and to be invited to document the progress. Here are a few photos from the last trip.

A typical Baja landscape on the way up North.

Ian introduces hand sanitizer to the cooks at a boarding school, and the dispensers that will be in the dining halls as well.

Giving a talk to the health educators for Comondu.

We stopped at various Ranchos in the northern region, stopping near Las Barrancas, San Juanico, Cadeje, Carambuche, and many other small towns. Here’s a typical rancho, creating a little oasis in an otherwise bone dry valley.

There was even a wine maker (they make wine in Baja!) near San Miguel de Comondu. His ancestors came from Italy in the 1800s, and he still uses their 200 year old press to make his wine.

We also got stuck in the mud on the way out, and spent 3 hours pushing Zorro (the red Toyota) around in order to get out. Here’s a quick photo I took before being called into service.

I’m back from my first outing into the rural communities with Fundacion Cantaro Azul to document the rollout of their Salud en tus Manos project. I went with Emily and Ian on their trip to do a set of surveys, meetings, and talks with the families living in the rural area of Comondu in central Baja. The goal of this trip was to start to evaluate whether hand sanitizer would be a good intervention to improve hand hygiene in these rural desert communities. Assuming that the project will go forward, the team was also gathering feedback on the educational program that is being planned for rural schools.

For 2 days we rolled along bumpy dirt roads while I marveled at the raw beauty of the Baja backcountry, and the incredible stamina of the ranchers who can scratch out a living from this very hot and dry place. It was really and eye-opener when we found that a two family ranch that we visited makes about 30,000 pesos at year ($3000). It really helps to put things in perspective.

I’m really enjoying working with Cantaro Azul documenting this project, combining my public health training and photography career at the same time. I’ll be heading out again for a 3 day trip tomorrow, and will be able to post more at that time. Until then, here are a few photos from the trip.

Here’s a typical (good) road, and a view of the picturesque canyons in the Sierra region of Comondu.

This weekend I continued my work with the adventure tours company Baja Challenge. As a reminder, this is a company that I will be working with to create publicity/advertising photos throughout the fall. I have been documenting the various tours and activities that Baja Challenge offers around peninsula area. It’s been a ton of fun experimenting with a different type of photography, working on my Spanish, and exploring this beautiful state of Mexico. This kind of work can really keep me in shape too!

We left from La Paz on an overcast Saturday morning, with a wonderful break from the heat and headed into the mountains to the South. The ride wound along a dirt road, climbing up into the mountains and then back down into an oasis-like river bed. We had some spectacular views, and I was quite surprised at how green this region of Baja was. Apparently a lot more moisture is caught by the mountains here, and at an elevation of about 1000m, the temperature was noticably cooler as well. What a wonderful place for a ride! Here are a few photos from the day:

The Baja Challenge team…

I took some liberties with Photoshop on this one. No, it wasn’t snowing. Quite the opposite in fact. But I’m having fun this afternoon.
And a great shot of your intrepid photographer. Thanks to Lenin for this great image. It’s not often I get to be in front of the camera!
