I’m recently back from the Eastern Sierra Nevada, Death Valley, and the White Mountains. It was a wonderful camping trip, VERY cold and windy, and a good chance to put my camera to use outside of the wedding context.

One of my favorite stops was the Bristlecone Pine forrest in the White Mountains. Truly a spectacular location with the oldest trees in the world (over 4,000 years old).

I’m just back from the San Ramon region of Nicaragua. While there I was engaging a bit more with my public health background than photography, working with an NGO I started with some friends called Teach for Health. We have a community health worker program in 18 rural coffee farming communities, providing education, networking opportunities, and basic resources to community leaders who are interested in initiating programs that will help prevent disease, develop community infrastructure, and improve disaster and emergency preparedness. While I spent the vast majority of my time in August working, I did get to take a few photos. The following photos are of some of our wonderful health promoters and their families:

Just back from Derek and Tiara’s destination wedding in Hawaii. The day after the wedding the whole crew (Nancy, Peter and myself) went out to the beautiful Lanikai beach outside of Kailua. It was the prettiest beach I’ve come across on Oahu and I managed to take these two photos before putting the camera down to take in some sun. Wedding photos to come shortly.

Nancy also wanted some beach photos too. No problem being a photographer and a model- you always know what you want! Nancy loves toned images with an antique look. And if you ever wonder if it’s annoying to have a back seat photographer when you’re taking photos….yes it is . One my way and one hers.

Nicaragua Public Health Project Fundraiser

As some of you may know, I have worked in various public health projects over the past several years and will continue to put my MPH to use where possible in the future. This coming year I will be involved in a program in Nicaragua that builds healthcare capacity in the rural region of San Ramon. UCSF medical students and University of Hawaii Students will be joining with the local public health clinic UCA San Ramon and the local municipal government to provide equipment and training for ambulance workers serving 32,000 people in 89 coffee farming communities. Additionally, the team will work with our local NGO contacts to develop a sustainable education program that trains community health workers in areas such as infectious disease prevention, sanitation, first aid, family planning and chronic disease management.

The project needs an additional $8,000 of funding to get off the ground- prompting me to integrate my dual interests of photography and public health for a bit of fundraising! So here’s the pitch…

I’m just back from a beautiful 10 day trip to Norway, where I met with my friends Fredrik and Elin for a whirlwind tour around their country. We started in Oslo, then headed out for some hiking on the beautiful Besseggen Mountain in Jotunheim (central Norway). We ended things with a trip to the far north to visit Fredrik’s family in Tromsø. That far north nightime never turned into total darkness. Instead, the sun would set at around 10:30, and we would enjoy a beautiful sunset/sunrise for 5 hours until the sun rose again. I absolutely love the country and am so glad I had the chance to catch up with my friends and take advantage of a wedding-free weekend this summer. Here are a few shots:

I’m back from my trip to Bolivia. 4 weeks of trekking: starting at the border of Argentina, then 4 days by jeep through the mountains, deserts to the incredible Uyuni Salt Flats (Salar de Uyuni). Then on to Sucre, Cochabamba, La Paz, Lake Titicaca, Madidi National Park rainforest, and back home to the good old Bay Area. Here are just a few favorites, starting with the Salar de Uyuni.

Laguna Colorada, with its myriad of flamingos, red water, and salt bergs.

Nights are cold at high altitude. Everybody needs an extra sweater- even the dogs apparently.

Just a quick note from Chochabamba, Bolivia. Wifi cafes are not exactly the norm here, so photos will be slow coming. I do have regular access to email though, and will be back in California on June 3. From here Nancy and I will be heading to La Paz, then up to the Madidi National Park and Lake Titicaca.

Patagonia

I’ve made it back from Patagonia, and on to the next phase of my South American trip. Nancy and I spent about 10 days in Parque Nacional Los Glaciares (Glaciers National Park) in Argentina. It is known for the Fitz Roy Mountain range, with spectacular trekking, along with the Perito Moreno Glacier, a huge mass of ice that calves regularly into Lago Argetina with huge booming crashes. April was a wonderful time to see the area, with fall colors turning the alpine beech trees into little bonzai forests of bright yellow and red, surrounded by jagged peaks and glaciers. Simply spectacular- and beyond the capacity of either words of photos to fully explain. The glacier in contrast was impressive, and well worth a day trip, but nothing compared to the isolated natural beauty of the mountains beyond.

Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, and more?

For those of you who don’t know, I’m currently on my way through South America, traveling with my girlfriend Nancy through Chile, Argentina, and Bolivia. Thus far we have made our way through a day in Mexico City, and then down to Chile where we have visitied Santiago, Valpariaso, Pucon, and we’re now on the shores of Argentine Lake Bariloche to get into Patagonia and Glaciers National Park in Argentina. This will be followed by the Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. Cold, but fun! I’m actually off to buy some gloves after this blog post, as my fingers almost froze last night walking around town.

Here’s a quick favorite of a dancer we passed in (warmer) Mexico City, in full Aztec regalia dancing in from of the Zocolo (central square).
