Drakes Beach | Point Reyes National Seashore

I have now arrived in Arizona, where I’ll be spending the next 5 days at the exciting DWF Photography conference at the Carefree Resort, just outside of Phoenix. I’m looking forward to meeting some fellow photographers and taking my photo game up to the next level. In the meantime…here are a few photos that I just finished going through from a trip I took this past week with my girlfriend Nancy.

Just across the Bay in Marin we are lucky to have the beautiful Pt. Reyes National Seashore. It’s really a wonderful place to explore the great outdoors, and if you’re me, to do some landscape photography as well. Doing a bit of Google searching I found a great campsite at the Samuel P. Taylor State Park, only 6 miles from Point Reyes. It’s the site of an abandoned paper mill from the 1850′s and almost looks like a rainforest from the Northwest USA. We took a great hike in that park, made a nice campfire, and the next day headed out to try and find something new. We then happened upon one of my greatest finds to date in the Bay Area, and perhaps one of my favorite beaches ever- Drakes Beach.

Looking through photos of Pt. Reyes, I’ve come across pictures of a particular deserted beach with big white cliffs that could be straight from England or Scottland, towering above the sand. In a random following of  road signs this past trip I finally ended up at this particular paradise – Drakes Beach. It was all that I could have hoped for and more. We were almost the only ones at the beach, with miles to explore on our own. We ran into elephant seals on the beach, elk on the way back, and a spectacular (nearly) full moon setting over the cliffs to end out day.

This would make for an amazing wedding location or engagement shoot spot. It’s not convenient…but the most beautiful and isolated spots rarely are. And, in spite of the twists and turns on the narrow road, it’s only 1.5 hours away from Berkeley. Not bad at all. I’ll be back as soon as I can. Below are a few of my photos from this past trip. I hope it inspires a few of you to get out to this beautiful area. Pt. Reyes, and Drakes Beach above all is a must-see section of the Bay Area.
