Besse + Mike | Bride’s Magazine Featured Sonoma Wedding

Besse and Mike’s beautiful estate wedding was a creative blend of Southern California surf culture mixed with the natural beauty of Sonoma wine country. It was set at the beautiful Adytum estate where Besse grew up, in the hills overlooking Sonoma valley. Mexican blankets covered hay bales for the outdoor ceremony under oak trees, fronted by an altar made of surfboards. The wedding dress was a custom Vera Wang which was modeled after a dress that Besse fell in love with while traveling in Florence back in 2007. The candlelit reception took place on the back patio with a spectacular California sunset and rolling hills before the guests turned to dancing under the stars.

Alejandra + Abel | Cabo San Lucas Wedding

Alejandra and Abel were married in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Each time I photograph a wedding I appreciate the unique approach that the couple takes to the day as a whole. There is a certain theme to a wedding, with an ebb and flow that has become increasingly familiar as I have been to so many over the years. Yet between the getting ready, ceremony, family formals, and reception there is so much room for new traditions and an infinite number of ways for the couple to make their dream day unfold. For Ale and Abel, I can definitively say that the focus of this incredible wedding was on the party. The event started with a brunch at the Querencia Resort in Los Cabos before the couple and 200 of their closest friends hopped aboard a chartered yacht to sail around the bay for an up close view of the famous Cabo arches. The wedding preparations began at the Westin Los Cabos, before heading for the ceremony and reception on the beach at the Hilton Los Cabos. It was epic. It was huge. It had six jumbotrons, 500 international guests, a custom stage built onto the Los Cabos beach, spotlights coloring the waves, live bands from all over Mexico, and my favorite, fireworks. It was beautiful, opulent, and laid out with impeccable taste. Coming from the music and movie production business, as well as the hotel business, it is no wonder they were able to put together such a night to remember. For this wedding I paired up with my talented friend and colleague Ian Balam, as I usually do for weddings in Mexico.

Sam + Elise | Stanford Engagement Shoot

The prior engagement shoot with Sam and Elise turned out so well, the two decided to do another one weeks after their wedding in Salt Lake City. It was a decision made easier by the chance to take some photos at Stanford, where they had met in the early undergraduate years. With a great set of images already in hand we got to play around a bit more. I’ve worked at Stanford many times in the past, and each time I return to a shooting location I try to be a bit more daring, creative and unique to keep things interesting. With the perfect models, this shoot went off without a hitch.

Bryan & Jess | Yosemite Ahwahnee Hotel Wedding

Bryan and Jess were married in beautiful Yosemite National Park at the world famous Ahwahnee Hotel. The majesty and beauty of this wedding location is simply difficult to describe. However, let me stop before this blog post goes much further by saying that this was not at all a typical wedding. I prefer to limit the text of most of my posts and let the photos stand alone, though in this case the wedding deserves a bit more explanation. After shooting hundreds of weddings at this point in my career, is is pretty hard to get me to say “you want to do what?!” in a consultation. Of course, I was quick to say, “absolutely, that would be amazing!” for obvious reasons to follow. It’s the most unique and heartwarming ceremony I have been a part of to date.

Bryan and Jess are two of the most unique people I have ever encountered. Full of vivacity, audacity, unlimited energy, brilliance, and boundless kindness. Jessica met Bryan in downtown San Francisco, where she was attempting to carry a full size mattress on her back with the aid of a bicycle. Bryan offered his aid (and if you see Bryan you’ll know you want his help with moving anything heavy) and the rest is history. Well, almost. See, in spite of his immaculate professional appearance and career as a physical therapist Bryan was living in a hammock in a eucalyptus grove behind the UCSF campus in San Francisco. But that was ok. Within three months of meeting Bryan had mapped out a 10 year plan for their lives (and three years later they are still right on schedule). Jess, a management consultant, was to move in with a van they purchased next to the grove. As long as she was warm she was happy. Professional lives established, it was time to get married.

Intensely outdoorsy people, Yosemite was the easy choice for the wedding which took place on the Ahwahnee Hotel’s front lawn, with the granite cliffs, towering trees, and Yosemite Falls as gorgeous backdrops. Avid climbers, the pair cinched their union with a knot tying ceremony before retiring to a wonderful meal at the John Muir Room. The day didn’t end there though. All wedding guests who were able then donned their hiking gear (including Jess’ family from Lima, Peru who have never been hiking or to a national park before). We set out from the valley floor and hiked an intense five miles (and 2000+ feet up) the valley wall to Glacier Point with a spectacular view over the Yosemite high country. Once there, the couple, neither of whom has cut their hair even once since 18, committed to removing all of their hair for a symbolic fresh start together. With Bryan’s trademark dreadlocks, and Jess’ flowing long black hair, the change was stark for both.

Not stopping with their wedding adventure, the pair went down to Peru for a three month honeymoon. They started by getting passage on a ship heading down the Amazon river, where they did acroyoga (acrobatic couples yoga) among the trees. They then hiked out to remote Amazon villages so Bryan could study human posture not influenced by a lifetime of sitting in chairs. And finally, they shipped their tandem bicycle to Peru, which they rode though the Andes before returning back to the Bay Area. They are now house hunting, growing out their hair, and perhaps (though I doubt it’s possible) joining the ranks of the traditional corporate/young professional group. So now, at long last with the story aside, I hope you enjoy the photos.

Bryan and Jess, it’s been an honor to be in your lives, and to have shared in your amazing wedding. I wish you the best. -Noah

Chris + Laura Engagement | San Francisco Downtown

Chris and Laura wanted some beautiful engagement portraits with a little bit of fun and non-traditional thrown in of course. I hazarded the suggestion of the San Francisco Palace of Fine Arts with great trepidation, as it is the single most commercialized, busy photo location in the city. But with a sense of humor and patience, and an appreciation for quinceanera and bridal fashion (likely to encounter 5 or more groups of each in a given hour) we managed to have a wonderful time. I wanted to use the shadows of the large structures during mid-day when we had to schedule the shoot, before crossing the street to Crissy Field once the light was softer. We finished the day down by the back alley’s of the financial district where Chris works.

Matt + Lisa | Thomas Fogarty Winery Wedding

I’ve known Matt and Lisa for years, even living with Lisa in Cape Town for a Stanford study abroad class where Matt was just name. But even then I noticed Lisa’s certainty that in fact did lead to the big wedding at the Thomas Fogarty Vineyard in the hills above Palo Alto many years later. As you perhaps can gather by the photos below, Lisa is quite the character, with “spunky” being an adjective that just barely scratches the surface. Aside from the sass, of course both Lisa and Matt are incredibly warm, welcoming and wonderful people. It was such a pleasure to reconnect and share in their special day.
